Xenon Anaesthesia
Xenon is the only inert gas, which demonstrates anaesthetic properties in normobaric conditions.
Xenon was discovered in 1898 from W. Ramsay and M.Travers. They classified the gas to the group of rare gases in the chemical periodic system. Cullen and Gross in 1951 conducted the first anaesthesia with Xenon gas in human.
During the Fifties xenon felt into oblivion after single trials because of its costs and its limited availability.
In the beginning of 1990 the interest in xenon increased, because this anaesthetic gas has many properties of an ideal anaesthetic substance and provides high haemodynamic stability for the patient during the surgical procedure.
After development of specialized anaesthesia circuits, the costs of a xenon anaesthesia are nowadays reduced.
Since 2005 in Germany and since 2007 in 11 additional European countries, xenon is approved by health authorities as an anaesthetic agent.
This website of the Association of Xenon Anaesthesia (Förderer der Xenon Anästhesie e.V.) will provide information about xenon anaesthesia for anaesthesiologists.
The xenon database (RegiXuser) was founded to collect information about xenon anaesthetic procedures worldwide.
After registration participating anaesthesiologist will be allow to enrich this database with their anaesthetic regimens as well their observations. and to share their data with all other members.
Regularly statistical reports will be available for all registered members of the Association for Xenon Anaesthesia.
